canymed GmbH (part of the Grünhorn Group) participated with its own booth at Germany's most important forum for pharmacy-related exchange.
In the second week of October, the annual leading trade fair for the pharmacy market, Expopharm, took place in Munich. The event was officially opened by Federal Health Minister Prof. Dr. Karl Lauterbach (SPD), Bavarian Health Minister Judith Gerlach (CSU), and Gabriele Regina Overwiening, President of the German Pharmacists' Association (ABDA). Grünhorn was represented with a booth by its medical cannabis wholesaler and manufacturer, canymed GmbH (part of the Grünhorn Group).
A total of 200 expert contributions were delivered by 200 speakers at the event. One of the key topics discussed was "The Future of Pharmacies" in light of the growing closure of pharmacies and the shortage of skilled professionals in Germany. The medical cannabis industry is also affected by this shortage of pharmacists, as the volume of orders has multiplied since the partial legalization in April 2024. Because cannabis remains a prescription-compounded medicine, it is legally required to be processed by pharmaceutical technical assistants (PTAs) or licensed pharmacists. However, hiring additional staff is difficult due to the nationwide shortage, which in turn hinders the scaling of cannabis pharmacies and limits further economic growth in the sector. “It was crucial for us to discuss business-critical and political topics with pharmacists, manufacturers, and policymakers at Expopharm,” said Matthias Fischer, CEO of canymed GmbH.
Another key focus of the event was artificial intelligence and digitalization in pharmacies. “It’s essential to provide doctors and patients with the information they need to make informed decisions about their cannabis therapy,” said Matthias Fischer. “Expopharm is an important networking event for us to exchange ideas about innovations, opportunities, and necessities in the pharmacy business.” Through its proprietary terpene analyses and machine learning technology, the Grünhorn Pharmacy has developed the Digital Flower Finder, a tool designed to simplify the identification of suitable cannabis cultivars tailored to individual treatment goals.
